Warhammer 40,000: Eternal Crusade Fan Art - Chaos Space Marine Chainsword

Final Colored - Chaos Chainsword
Greetings all!

Had a chance to do a bit more work on this series. Getting closer to the end and looking forward to it. Pretty soon, I shall have the other Chaos Cursed Armor, Grenade, etc. to add to the collection.

For now, I have uploaded the steps and final piece most recently worked on.

For those that do not know, this is a Chaos Space Marine version of a Chainsword - common tool of vanquishing one's enemies in the grimdark of the Warhammer 40,000 Universe (Eternal Crusade included).

The process has been largely the same:
  1. Outline sketch in just dark black lines and white
  2. Scanned into PC and edit in Photoshop to clean up lines (crop, paste, mirror if half image needing to be stitched).
  3. Print on illustration paper with high contrast
  4. Using a good pencil (I prefer the Black Warrior Mirado), and imaging a fake light source, add shading and highlights to denote value, depth, and dimension.
  5. Scan that into PC as well. Making sure that each step is saved as a new file.
  6. Open file in Photoshop and lay some base colors down using layer over grayscale image set to a Multiply blend setting.
  7. If needed, add some layers to work in more dark shadows and lighter edge highlights. The shadows layer likely you'll want on Multiply again. However, the highlights can be Normal, but different Opacity.

Here are other steps of this Chaos Space Marine Chainsword fan art I did:

Black and White - Chaos Chainsword
Grayscale - Chaos Chainsword
Base Colors - Chaos Chainsword
Colored and Shaded with Highlights - Chaos Chainsword

Bonus:

Kre'eel - The Exalted's Evisceration Device
The Exalted hoisted his infernal hatred machine over his head, blades growling and whirring at unimaginable speed, poised to bring down unholy vengeance unto his foe. When it finally planted itself into the plasteel floorplates of the spacehulk, the Chapter Master of our Legion lay motionless amid a shroud of smoke, sparks, and blood. His form had been bisected from head to toe. From that day, we came to call the Exalted's hated tool of execution as the 'Evisceration Device'. We've been on the hunt for the Exalted ever since. That was 10,000 years ago. Our passion and determination have never faltered or faded. Soon, we shall find him and pass judgement on that foul devotee of the ruinous Chaos Gods. Will you join our quest, brother?

New Batch of Warhammer 40,000 Models Complete!

Wow, it has been a while since I have posted anything on this blog. Lately, I have been working on this group of Warhammer 40,000 Chaos Space Marines. This is a mixture of some models and bits that I had painted almost 10 years ago and never liked the result and some newer bits and models that include pewter and plastic and Space Marine conversions. You will also notice, if your eye is keen, some mixtures of Khrone Bezerker bits with Iron Warrior bits. Not to mention some completely different model pieces. I have come to call these the Brass Raptors, for some obvious reasons. You can see the above pictures for specific model descriptions and details. One thing you might not be able to notice from these pix is how I put them together. After many years of putting these kits together, and after many breaking apart in multiple moves, I came to realize that the glued joints needed bolstered support. I have used 1/16 thick cut brass rod from my local hobby store. If you are familiar at all with this technique, you know how long it can take and how painfully tedious it can be, especially on pewter bits. Not to mention making holes large enough and deep enough for the rod placement and gluing to be effective. In most of these, I used a hand pin-vise to bore the rod holes, sometimes all the way through the torso to make the arm joints. In the end, I know it was worth the effort since some I knocked over and never even cracked. Some of the models had some warp effect detailed as a multi-colored ooze coming from the very core of these Chaos Marines. The models were all finished with a coat of brushed-on Satin finish acrylic poly. Enjoy! Sharing and comments encouraged and welcomed!
