Lord Typhus, Herald of Nurlge
Old Sculpt Miniature Paint Up by Tim Kaney Hello all my friends amd followers! Long time since posting on my art blog. A nice and simple post here, hopefully. II am very pleased to share my finished paint up of the old school sculpt of Lord Typhus, Herald of Nurgle. Only a few years late. I actually bought it when it came out or maybe got it as a gift. This is a model from the table top wargame Warhammer 40,000. It was quite a nice model, albeit smaller than the current one, and fun to paint. It was one of the old all pewter models. I utilized an older paint scheme with vomit brown base layers, brown yucky washes and yucky shades. From there I used putrid green and other green for top layers and highlights. Finally I top coated with brush on Satin Varnish and then based with some classic railroad gravel and sponge bushes. The gore bits and vlood on the scythe is the new technical paint Blood for the Blood God. Brushes used are various and none of them super expensive. I have found that even those invariably break, deteriorate, and go bate at a rate all not too much different than mid-grade or lower brushes. This was primed in Krylon Grey Paint and Primer. All said and done was a few hours. Paints: Citadel, Army Painter, Folk Art, Plaid, P3, etc.

In Progress ShotsGoing to have a few new posts here. Finally got a chance to post recent projects that I managed to get wrapped up. This first one is a built heldrake from Warhammer 40,000. That first shot is the finished product sans varnish and even comes with a fully finished base. Woot!
As far as builds go, the Chaos Heldrake is especially challenging and not all that logical, if you ask me. I would see many posts about them on social media and most people complain about and bemoan the painting of the trim and such. While I did find the trim tedious, I actually found the build more vexing. The pieces were tough fitting together and there were many mold lines. In many places you had to fit pieces together before adhering them to another. Finally, the final pose of the Heldrake was not as pictured and teetered quite literally as incorrect and unbalanced. That said, the final piece, as I knew it would be, was worth every second of blood, sweat , and tears. It really is a stunning kit and makes for a great centerpiece on the battlefield. Paint Scheme As is clear by the name and paint theme, this is fashioned after the motifs seen used by the Night Lords including midnight blue, gold trim, and lightning accents. The mouth weapon option for my Heldrake was the baleflamer. Trim Scheme: Antique Gold, Agrax Earthshade, then highlights of Antique Metallic Gold and Metallic Inca Gold. Armor Blue Scheme: Deadly Nightshade / Navy, Nuln Oil, Too Blue Lightning Bolts Scheme: Wysteria Glycine, White, Too Blue Metal / Skin Scheme: Metallic Gunmetal, Armor Wash / Nuln Oil, and Metallic Aluminum Eye scheme: thinned White, thinned Burnt Orange Baleflamer scheme: Burnt Orange, Nuln Oil, White, thinned Burnt Orange, thinned Yellow Light, thinned White Brands used: Citadel, Apple Barrel, Plaid, Crafstmart, DecoArt, FolkArt, and FormulaP3. Basing Scheme: Leaf Green, Model Train turf gravel and sponge bush, using Elmer's Extreme PVA glue and glue for model terrain. Hope you all enjoy. Give a shout and share and like, etc. on Twitter and Insta @kaneykreative and @tskaney. Thanks for reading. Stay tuned for more. Old Edition Chaos Space Marine Terminator Repaints as Nightlords Wanted to share this lot I have been working on recently. I wanted to repaint to a suitable level these old Chaos Space Marine Terminator boiz as a newer Nightlords army I am going to be expanding for my entire collection of Chaos Warhammer 40,000 Models. Finally got to a place that I am calling them done. Learned a lot in this process. Also, grew a lot as well. This is a collection of decent photos with them. Enjoy! (No, I did not strip them first). #paintingwarhammer #wh40kpaint #warhammerpaint #chaos #nightlords By now, you probably noticed that Primaris conversion...he was painted at the same time using the new Contrast paints as a test subject. A little filtering here...
Nightlords Chaos Space Marine Inspired Frag Grenade Concept Hey all, Keeping on a roll here – happy and excited to show another piece from the Chaos Space Marine Eternal Crusade Fan Art series. The images here are of a concept of a Chaos frag grenade. I have drawn on some inspiration from the Nightlords faction of chaos space marines. The colors are similar and there is a dense pattern of lightning streaks. This process was a bit different but still in using Photoshop, my PC, pencil and paper, scanner, and a Wacom pen and tablet. Again, this was started as a line sketch years ago, not very clean, I admit, then I finally moved it into a scanned image. Just the other day and finishing tonight, I have gotten the shaded layer and then the color overlay complete. I seem to prefer to do things this way right now and works well. I might use the Multiply layer settings or others. Usually, I would have done the grayscale shading with pencil, but I am working on getting better and more comfortable with it using digital methods. In all, I am happy with the results. Thanks for keeping with me. Enjoy! Backstory: 17 were made. One for each of the elite guard of the Nightlord champion Nurlic the Nightshade. Each imbued with the carrier’s own connection to the warp. Each were covered in the ornate and striking lightning workings reflective of their brothers’ legion. These group of fragmentation grenades were meant to be gifts for each of those guard. They were to use them in the rarest of occasions when they were in need of especially potent ordinance to inflict maximum carnage on their brothers loyal to the Golden Throne. Rumors abound of these never having been used and all being collected in one weapons cache on a particularly daring rogue trader’s vessel. Reports of it being seen in a forgotten sector of space surface from time to time in trader outposts. None know for sure. Until a year ago when a derelict ship was found floating into Imperium space and was quickly confiscated by the Black Ships. No one knows what has become of those artifacts since then. This particular concept / fan art is an old sketch I have recently done up in photoshop. Resplendent and ominous at the same time, this concept is what I think a krak grenade would look like if it belonged to a faction of chaos space marines. I have always been a follower of the ruinous powers when playing, painting, collecting, and being a fan of Warhammer 40,000. Thus, the reason for all the Chaos-themed items in this series. The process is simple, yet tedious at times. It started a few years back being inspired by the release of Eternal Crusade. I loved the items you could get from playing so I visualized my own set of wargear for chaos space marines. These all started as pencil line sketches on paper. Next, they are scanned or imaged into my computer. After that, I would print the cleaned-up line work and then shade that version in on paper using a set of art pencils or just my favorite Black Warrior Mirado Pencils. The last few I started to challenge myself and shaded them using my Wacom Intuous Bamboo and Photoshop. Finally, using a few filters and many layers, I simply paint single layers of color overlays to make them pop. I usually save these different steps out so I can show the process in a post. Back Story Blastiche Krilgin of the Oratory Font of the Ragegivers Warband of Chaos Space Marines was out of ammunition for his loyal bolt pistol and his power sword had been jammed into a gearwork of his prey’s transport carrier. He was lacking in the warp-gifts and not particularly large. His comrades had either advanced through the fog of war and left him or lay scattered around the immediate vicinity as a result of their assault cannon defense batteries. Yet, he was still eager and optimistic. He had assisted in the spearhead and seen many of the foe stricken down in their righteous fury in the name of their deity. Many moments were taken to rehearse the litany of devotions to imbue his cohort with renewed zeal and ferocity. He was tired, he had to admit, as he was still mostly human. He had looked around for something he could use. A tinny noise at his waste interjected his internal dialogue. Could it be? His hand instinctively grabbed for something. It was there. He tilted his head down and beheld a glorious sight. The Oratory Font brethren all carried these. Of course. In his battle-rage he had forgotten. So it was that Blastiche was able to enter the enemy’s compound and begin the ending of their suffering and grant them deliverance to the Ruinous Powers. The simple, yet effective krak grenade became legend that day. From then on, it would be known as the Lone Demise of Asteroth, the namesake of the wretched homeworld of the antagonists of the Ragegivers. https://play.eternalcrusade.com/ https://www.wacom.com/en-us/products https://warhammer40000.com/ https://www.photoshop.com/ https://www.amazon.com/Mirado-Warrior-Woodcase-Pencil-Nontoxic/dp/B07HMFQ6PD/ref=sr_1_1?hvadid=78340271162382&hvbmt=be&hvdev=c&hvqmt=e&keywords=mirado+black+warrior+pencil&qid=1557811428&s=gateway&sr=8-1 Greetings all! Had a chance to do a bit more work on this series. Getting closer to the end and looking forward to it. Pretty soon, I shall have the other Chaos Cursed Armor, Grenade, etc. to add to the collection. For now, I have uploaded the steps and final piece most recently worked on. For those that do not know, this is a Chaos Space Marine version of a Chainsword - common tool of vanquishing one's enemies in the grimdark of the Warhammer 40,000 Universe (Eternal Crusade included). The process has been largely the same:
Here are other steps of this Chaos Space Marine Chainsword fan art I did: Bonus: Kre'eel - The Exalted's Evisceration Device The Exalted hoisted his infernal hatred machine over his head, blades growling and whirring at unimaginable speed, poised to bring down unholy vengeance unto his foe. When it finally planted itself into the plasteel floorplates of the spacehulk, the Chapter Master of our Legion lay motionless amid a shroud of smoke, sparks, and blood. His form had been bisected from head to toe. From that day, we came to call the Exalted's hated tool of execution as the 'Evisceration Device'. We've been on the hunt for the Exalted ever since. That was 10,000 years ago. Our passion and determination have never faltered or faded. Soon, we shall find him and pass judgement on that foul devotee of the ruinous Chaos Gods. Will you join our quest, brother? Wow, it has been a while since I have posted anything on this blog. Lately, I have been working on this group of Warhammer 40,000 Chaos Space Marines. This is a mixture of some models and bits that I had painted almost 10 years ago and never liked the result and some newer bits and models that include pewter and plastic and Space Marine conversions. You will also notice, if your eye is keen, some mixtures of Khrone Bezerker bits with Iron Warrior bits. Not to mention some completely different model pieces. I have come to call these the Brass Raptors, for some obvious reasons. You can see the above pictures for specific model descriptions and details. One thing you might not be able to notice from these pix is how I put them together. After many years of putting these kits together, and after many breaking apart in multiple moves, I came to realize that the glued joints needed bolstered support. I have used 1/16 thick cut brass rod from my local hobby store. If you are familiar at all with this technique, you know how long it can take and how painfully tedious it can be, especially on pewter bits. Not to mention making holes large enough and deep enough for the rod placement and gluing to be effective. In most of these, I used a hand pin-vise to bore the rod holes, sometimes all the way through the torso to make the arm joints. In the end, I know it was worth the effort since some I knocked over and never even cracked. Some of the models had some warp effect detailed as a multi-colored ooze coming from the very core of these Chaos Marines. The models were all finished with a coat of brushed-on Satin finish acrylic poly. Enjoy! Sharing and comments encouraged and welcomed!
